The High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, has granted a sweeping forfeiture order resulting in a R100 million Rietfontein property and R27,800 in cash being seized by the state under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (POCA).
The order follows a massive multi-disciplinary takedown operation executed by the National and Gauteng Provincial Organised Crime Investigation Narcotics Units, Crime Intelligence, and the West Rand K9 and Tactical Response teams. Following extensive surveillance, the law enforcement coalition executed a search warrant on the plot, uncovering a highly sophisticated clandestine drug laboratory dedicated to manufacturing methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth.
A Mexican national was arrested on the scene, where police confiscated high-grade manufacturing chemicals, specialized lab equipment, and large quantities of finished product.
The successful preservation order officially authorizes the National Prosecuting Authority’s Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) to auction off the multi-million rand Rietfontein estate. All proceeds from the asset liquidation, alongside the recovered physical cash, will be directly funneled into the state’s Criminal Assets Recovery Account (CARA) to bankroll future anti-drug enforcement initiatives. The decisive ruling marks a massive blow against transnational drug syndicates operating manufacturing hubs within South Africa's borders.
