Former Mhala Magistrates’ Court interpreter Timothy Sibuyi (49) has been sentenced to five years of direct imprisonment by the Commercial Crimes Court after being convicted of corruption.
The conviction stems from a November 2023 incident where Sibuyi approached the brother of an individual facing rape charges. The interpreter falsely claimed he could influence the case by securing a Legal Aid attorney, demanding R2,500 in "cooldrink" money for the lawyer. When the brother initially ignored the request and blocked his number, Sibuyi escalated his tactics by contacting the detained accused directly, threatening that he would spend Christmas behind bars if the funds were not transferred.
Out of fear, the family deposited the R2,500 into Sibuyi’s bank account but immediately reported the extortion to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation team based in Nelspruit. Following a thorough investigation, the Hawks secured a warrant, leading to Sibuyi's arrest and subsequent trial.
Welcoming the sentence, Mpumalanga Hawks Provincial Head Major General Nico Gerber emphasized that the Directorate remains strictly committed to weeding out officials who abuse positions of trust for personal gain. The ruling sends a clear message that corruption within the criminal justice system will face harsh consequences.
