The South African Police Service (SAPS) executive leadership in the Eastern Cape has formally condemned a tragic murder-suicide incident that resulted in the deaths of two serving police officers in Gqeberha. The incident occurred during the early hours at the couple’s residence in Parsonsvlei, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding mental health, domestic conflict, and firearm misuse within police ranks.
According to official SAPS media statements, preliminary investigations indicate that a domestic altercation broke out between the married couple shortly before midnight. Responding officers dispatched to the scene discovered the bodies of a 34-year-old female Sergeant stationed at Mount Road SAPS and her 44-year-old husband, a Sergeant stationed at New Brighton SAPS. Both individuals sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were declared deceased at the scene, with the state firearm believed to have been used in the shooting recovered and confiscated by forensic investigators.
The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) unit has been activated to provide psychological counseling and support to surviving family members, colleagues, and two minor children who were present inside the home at the time of the fatal shooting. Top police management reiterated a strong appeal to law enforcement personnel struggling with emotional distress or marital disputes to urgently utilize internal psychological support services rather than resorting to violence.
