The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) of the National Prosecuting Authority has secured a final forfeiture order amounting to R326 million targeting high-value assets belonging to members of the Maumela syndicate. The judicial order forms part of ongoing multi-agency enforcement operations recovering public funds siphoned from Tembisa Hospital through large-scale procurement fraud and corruption.
Forensic investigations conducted by National Treasury's Specialised Audit Services and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed that entities controlled by Hangwani Morgan Maumela irregularly secured lucrative health department supply contracts between 2016 and 2022. The fraudulent scheme was originally uncovered by slain Gauteng Department of Health financial director Babita Deokaran, whose whistleblowing detailed widespread supply chain manipulation, cover-quoting, and inflated billing.
The forfeited assets include luxury residential properties located in affluent enclaves—such as Bantry Bay, Sandton, and Zimbali Estate—alongside a fleet of high-end vehicles comprising four Lamborghinis, a Bentley, and a luxury boat. All proceeds realized from the liquidation of the seized property will be deposited into the Criminal Asset Recovery Account and ring-fenced to restore public healthcare infrastructure within the Gauteng Department of Health.
