A high-stakes law enforcement operation ended in tragedy on Friday afternoon, 17 July 2026, after two members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) lost their lives in a disused mine shaft in West Johannesburg.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 06:00 on Friday morning at the abandoned CRD Mine, where the soldiers were actively deployed alongside the South African Police Service (SAPS).

• The Pursuit: According to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the joint task team spotted suspected illegal miners (zama-zamas) exiting the underground workings. When the suspects fled back down, security forces gave chase into a tunnel system.
