In a major step toward addressing regional border management challenges, South Africa and Malawi have officially signed a bilateral migration agreement aimed at tightening controls and curbing undocumented migration.
The pact was signed on Friday, 17 July 2026, by South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, and his Malawian counterpart, Dr. George Chaponda. The high-profile signing took place on the sidelines of the 28th Ordinary Meeting of the SADC Ministerial Committee of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation in Malawi.
Key Pillars of the Agreement:
• Targeting Irregular Migration: Malawian Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda clarified that the agreement specifically addresses the growing issue of undocumented individuals living in South Africa. He noted that while there is absolutely no issue with Malawians holding valid visas and residency permits, the problem lies with those residing in the country irregularly.
• Protecting Legal Migrants: The bilateral agreement aims to establish a more transparent framework that distinguishes between lawful travellers and undocumented entries, which officials hope will better protect documented foreign nationals from localized community friction.
• Joint Border Frameworks: The agreement comes amid a broader regional push by South Africa to enforce stricter immigration rules, following recent mass repatriations and processing bottlenecks involving undocumented nationals at the Beitbridge border post.
The diplomatic breakthrough signals an increasing willingness among SADC member states to share the responsibility of border management, creating legal frameworks to handle deportations and regularize regional travel safely.
