A devastating single-vehicle accident along the R612 route toward Ixopo in southern KwaZulu-Natal has claimed the lives of five people and left one occupant fighting for life in the hospital.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 21:10 on Saturday night when a VW Polo carrying six occupants lost control and collided violently with a roadside barrier.

• Fatalities Recorded: A preliminary report compiled by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) classified the scene as an extreme road traffic disaster. The five deceased victims include three females and two males, all of whom sustained fatal injuries during the impact.
• Critical Survivor: A sixth occupant survived the crash with severe, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a nearby regional medical facility by emergency services for urgent stabilization.
• Culpable Homicide Probe: Because of the high number of fatalities, the RTI has officially handed over management of the scene to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Accident Unit.
