The death toll from the heartbreaking school bus disaster in eastern Uganda has officially risen to 24, following confirmation that three more pupils tragically succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
The catastrophic incident occurred on Thursday evening at Chekwatit village in the Kapchorwa District. An Isuzu bus transporting learners and staff from King David Junior School in Kampala was returning from an educational excursion to the scenic Sipi Falls when tragedy struck. Preliminary traffic reports indicate the vehicle developed a sudden mechanical fault, causing the driver to lose control, veer off the road, and violently overturn after colliding with a massive roadside rock.
Among the 24 confirmed fatalities are 23 young schoolchildren and the school’s founder and director, Tadeo Ssekade, who was traveling alongside the learners. Dozens of injured survivors remain hospitalized across regional medical facilities, including Kapchorwa General Hospital, fighting for recovery.
In immediate response to the public outcry and rising child fatalities, Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports has ordered an indefinite nationwide suspension of all school trips, study tours, and excursions while comprehensive safety investigations proceed.
