MADONSELA URGES BUSINESSES TO PRIORITISE LOCAL HIRING FOR SOCIAL STABILITY

Former Public Protector Professor Thuli Madonsela has made a strong appeal to South African business leaders, urging them to actively prioritise the employment of local citizens over foreign nationals to safeguard social cohesion and boost economic inclusion.

Speaking on the sidelines of recent constitutional and social justice dialogues, the Stellenbosch University Law Professor highlighted that soaring unemployment and corporate hiring practices have become highly divisive flashpoints. Madonsela noted that when localized businesses bypass South African job seekers, it severely heightens community tensions and sparks resource-based conflicts in shared spaces.

Key Pillars of the Economic Appeal:

• Strategic Inclusivity: Madonsela emphasized that businesses must act ethically, recognizing that corporate stability is deeply tied to the socio-economic upliftment of the immediate communities hosting them.

• De-escalating Tension: By actively absorbing local labor, the private sector can help defuse regular anti-immigrant mobilizations and create a more secure operating environment.

• Law and Order: While advocating for local preference, she firmly condemned vigilantism, demanding that law enforcement decisively act against groups unlawfully targeting immigrant workers or raiding businesses.

The call aligns with intensifying national debates around the pending Employment Services Amendment Bill, which seeks to introduce strict sectoral quotas and massive fines for non-compliant employers. Madonsela maintains that building a sustainable future requires a conscious, unified pact where corporate recruitment directly drives local job creation.

Do you believe private businesses will voluntarily change their recruitment strategies to favor local citizens, or will the state have to enforce strict legal quotas to ensure corporate compliance? Let us know below.
