Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and his co-accused, identified in legal proceedings as Witness K, have appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court regarding their ongoing high-profile criminal case. The appearance follows their recent arrest by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate in connection with an investigation into the alleged theft of precious stones valued at nearly R15 million.
During the court session, state prosecutors formally indicated that the prosecution would not oppose the bail applications submitted by legal representatives for both Mkhwanazi and Witness K. The decision opens the way for the presiding magistrate to evaluate personal circumstances and fix appropriate financial and monitoring conditions for their release on bail pending trial.
The prosecution arises from allegations concerning a February 2023 raid on a residential apartment in Killarney, where high-value sugilite and manganese were reportedly seized without being logged into official police exhibit registers.
