JUSTICE SYSTEM: NINE BULTFONTEIN POLICE OFFICERS IN HIGH COURT PRE-TRIAL OVER FATAL 2024 SHOOTING

Nine police officers attached to the Bultfontein Public Order Policing Unit have appeared in the Welkom High Court for a pre-trial hearing on four counts of murder. The formal indictment stems from a fatal shooting incident that occurred in September 2024 at Phahameng township in the Free State.

According to state documents presented by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, the tactical response unit was dispatched to attend to a domestic dispute. Following an escalation where occupants barricaded themselves inside a residential property, responding members executed a tactical entry and discharged state firearms, recovering forty-three empty cartridge cases from the scene.

The resulting gunfire resulted in four fatalities, including three civilians from a single family and a fellow police officer, Constable Mojalefa Borole, who died from gunshot injuries. The high court pre-trial proceedings focus on establishing trial readiness, managing evidentiary disclosures, and establishing dates for formal trial proceedings.
