Tension keeps rising in what used to be South Africa's only hope party.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has intensified following revelations that new federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis has directly intervened, cautioning former leader John Steenhuisen against continuing to speak ill of the party and its leadership in public.
The deep political friction follows Steenhuisen's explosive media remarks after he was stripped of his high-profile Cabinet portfolio as Minister of Agriculture and reassigned to a lower post as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition. Steenhuisen openly lashed out at the party’s new management, alleging that his removal constituted a massive betrayal of initial leadership transition agreements. He went further to all, alleging private interests and public affairs firms were exerting influence over internal government appointments.
Senior DA officials confirmed that despite widespread anger over Steenhuisen airing internal grievances publicly, the Federal Executive has opted against initiating formal disciplinary action. Insiders have privately dismissed the public attacks as a personal tantrum from a wounded politician facing accountability over performance lapses, particularly regarding the handling of the recent foot-and-mouth disease crisis.
Federal leader Hill-Lewis maintained that all executive restructuring decisions were executed strictly in the national interest and the party's mandate, emphasizing that individual loyalties cannot take precedence over competent governance.
