South African motorists are looking at mixed fortunes at the pumps for August 2026, as initial massive over-recoveries from early July continue to shrink due to escalating international oil prices and renewed volatility in the Middle East.
According to the latest mid-month data from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), petrol users can still expect a modest price reduction next month, but diesel consumers might face a sudden price hike if global trends persist.
The Shrinking Cushion
The review period started with petrol over-recoveries tracking toward a substantial R2.00+ drop per litre. However, over the past two weeks, global crude oil prices have climbed back into the $80–$85 per barrel range, effectively wiping away a significant portion of that buffer.
Furthermore, with the National Treasury's temporary relief measures officially phased out as of July, the full General Fuel Levy remains reinstated, leaving pump prices highly vulnerable to international market shocks.
Expected August 2026 Price Movements (Based on Mid-Month Data):
• Petrol 93: Projected decrease of roughly R1.30 per litre.
• Petrol 95: Projected decrease of roughly R1.26 per litre.
• Diesel 0.05% (Wholesale): Under-recovery creeping in; potential minor increase or neutral change (currently tracking at a minor 47-cent drop that is rapidly eroding).
• Diesel 0.005% (Wholesale): Projected decrease of roughly 74 cents per litre (down from an early-month projection of over R2.50).
What Drivers Will Pay at the Pumps
If current trends hold until the end of the month, expected inland pump prices will shift as follows:
• 95 Petrol (Inland): Expected to drop from R26.10 to around R24.84 per litre.
• 93 Petrol (Inland): Expected to drop from R25.94 to around R24.64 per litre.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources will announce the official, finalised fuel price adjustments before they take effect on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.
