BREYTEN — The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has warmly welcomed a massive judicial victory against gender-based violence after the Mpumalanga Division of the High Court, sitting in Breyten, handed down a crushing sentence to a serial perpetrator. Simphiwe Xolani Mkhwanazi, a 22-year-old individual, was slapped with two life terms and an additional 105 years' imprisonment. The heavy sentence comes after Mkhwanazi was convicted on ten severe charges, including two counts of kidnapping, four counts of rape, murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and defeating the administration of justice.

The accused dragged her to nearby rocks where he raped her and robbed her of her sneakers, valued at R1,500, alongside cash and her cellphone. Merely a week later, on 7 August 2021, Mkhwanazi violently breached a local home. Holding the occupants at knifepoint, he ordered them to cover themselves with a blanket before dragging a young woman to the center of the room, forcing her to kneel, and raping her in the presence of her family before fleeing with their cellphones and cash.
The predatory attacks continued into 2023. On 10 June 2023, another victim was accosted by Mkhwanazi and an unidentified accomplice while walking home from a tavern. She was dragged into an abandoned house, raped, and robbed of her phone. Proving her resilience, she immediately reported the assault to the police despite not knowing her attacker's identity. The violence reached a fatal peak in August 2023, when Ellen Dlamini was targeted after socializing with patrons at the Etshanini Tavern in Daggakraal. After leaving the venue with the accused, she was never seen alive again. Following a frantic missing person's search by her family, her body was discovered three days later, crudely buried in a shallow grave.
Forensic Breakthroughs and DNA Triumphs in Court
The forensic breakthrough in the case occurred when police investigators tracked Mkhwanazi down and found him asleep right next to blood-stained clothing. Advanced DNA analysis conducted on the garments provided an undeniable match to the deceased, Ellen Dlamini. Additionally, the court ordered that his name be permanently entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders, declared him unfit to possess a firearm, and ruled him entirely unsuitable to ever work with children.
