DUDUZA – The community of Bluegumview in Duduza, Gauteng, has been plunged into deep shock and mourning following a devastating house fire that wiped out three generations of the same family in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The tragic incident, which occurred at a four-roomed RDP house on Sikelela Street, claimed the lives of 71-year-old grandmother Evelyn Mashiage Radebe, her 12-year-old granddaughter Ntombizodwa Christina Radebe, and her 3-year-old twin grandsons, Jabulani and Jabu Radebe.

Desperate Rescue Efforts by Neighbors
The nightmare began before dawn when an alert neighbor spotted thick smoke and violent flames engulfing parts of the residential structure. Raising the alarm immediately, brave community members rushed to the scene with buckets of water, forming a desperate bucket brigade to fight back the rapidly spreading heat.
Risking their lives, community members managed to breach the burning house. They discovered Gogo Evelyn lying unconscious on the floor. Moving further into the smoke-filled home, rescuers found the three young children inside a bedroom, where they had apparently been trapped by the swift path of the fire.
Emergency services from the Duduza Fire Station arrived on the scene shortly after 06:00 am. Tragically, despite the courageous intervention of neighbors, all four family members were officially declared dead at the scene by medical personnel.
Inquest and Investigations Opened
Preliminary forensic findings indicate that severe smoke inhalation was the primary cause of death for all four victims. Shockingly, the fire caused limited structural damage to the RDP house itself, primarily consuming a mattress and a portion of a bedroom headboard before generating the lethal, toxic smoke.
The tragic scene has since been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and local Disaster Management teams for further processing. The exact cause of the ignition remains unknown at this stage, and an inquest docket has been opened.
"Our deepest, most heartfelt condolences go out to the Radebe family and the entire Duduza community during this unimaginably painful time of grief."
